Punjab News: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has kick-started preparations for Punjab’s upcoming civic elections, which will be a critical test of its governance as it contests key urban centers for the first time. The elections, covering five municipal corporations and 42 municipal councils, are scheduled for late December.

Candidate Applications Open December 1

AAP Punjab state president Aman Arora, along with senior party leaders and ministers, convened a meeting on Thursday to discuss the election strategy. Starting December 1, applications will open for candidates aiming to contest in these polls. Arora stated that party legislators would highlight AAP's achievements over the past 2.5 years while contrasting them with the opposition’s governance failures.

Key Polling Areas

The civic polls will include municipal corporations in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Phagwara, along with bypolls in selected wards of Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Batala, and Abohar. The elections, long overdue, follow a notification issued by the state’s local government department after the Supreme Court mandated their completion within eight weeks.

Focus on Civic Issues

Local government minister Ravjot Singh has directed officials in the poll-bound areas to address pressing civic concerns such as waste management and sewerage improvements. This focus aims to enhance AAP’s appeal among urban voters by showcasing its commitment to efficient civic governance.

Confident of Setting Records

Arora expressed confidence in AAP’s prospects, claiming that Punjab’s voters have become familiar with the party’s governance model. The strategic meeting was attended by four state ministers and senior party figures, including MLAs, district chiefs, and organizational teams from the contested cities, emphasizing the party's intent to establish a strong urban electoral presence.

The civic elections mark a crucial step for AAP to solidify its hold over Punjab’s urban constituencies, with stakes high in cities such as Ludhiana and Amritsar.
